I created the artifact PowerPoint on "DEI Considerations in the Online Learning Space" for the Online Learning Consortium's Accelerate Conference to address the critical need for inclusivity and accessibility in online education especially when it comes to Gender/Age/Cultural biases in OWI. This PowerPoint presentation is designed to support teachers in understanding and implementing DEI principles to create more equitable and effective online learning environments.
The presentation draws heavily on the insights from the article "Working Toward Social Justice through Multilingualism, Multimodality, and Accessibility in Writing Classrooms" by Laura Gonzales and Janine Butler. The article emphasizes the importance of combining multilingualism and disability studies to foster social justice in writing studies. By embracing multilingualism, multimodality, and accessibility, educators can create classroom environments that support diverse communication needs and promote equity.
Gonzales and Butler advocate for pedagogies that consider accessibility through intersectional and interdependent approaches, putting language diversity and disability into conversation. This aligns with Sushil Oswal's definition of accessibility, which emphasizes equal participation and enjoyment of resources, technology, and opportunities. The PowerPoint presentation aims to translate these theoretical principles into practical strategies for online educators.
The PowerPoint presentation underscores the importance of accessible classroom principles and practices that support equitable communication among students, teachers, and various audiences. By highlighting the strengths of multilingualism and disability studies, the presentation encourages educators to create inclusive online spaces that cater to the needs of all students. This involves using multimodal teaching methods, ensuring technological accessibility, and fostering an inclusive classroom culture that values diverse perspectives on online writing students in higher education.
This artifact also serves as a resource for educators to better understand and implement DEI considerations in their online teaching practices in the University of Central Florida's online faculty development. By integrating the principles of multilingualism, multimodality, and accessibility, the presentation aims to promote social justice and equity in online education, ultimately benefiting a diverse student population.
